Phineas and Ferb
I wrote a story previously that went into my dislike of Sponge Bob; so to be fair I will go into my love of the cartoon Phineas and Ferb. I had been adverse to it before I watched it, because I believed that it was probably like everything else that is geared towards kids of the same age group. It is not. The cartoon is completely unique, and as all great cartoons, it is equally enjoyable for children and adults.
The first thing that caught my attention was the unbridled creativity, and innocent intelligence that the two main characters possess. The boys can do anything; the sky is the limit. I believe that this is such a wonderful message for children. We, as parents, limit our own children more than we think. When I first took my kids to their 4H Lego Robotics club, I was completely blown away. I had no idea that my kids could put some blocks together, plug them into a computer, program them, and create a moving robot. An example of kids who can accomplish anything that they set their minds to is something I am happy to have my kids watch on TV.
The second thing that I love is that the bad guy, the “evil” guy, is a complete and total idiot. He is ridiculed, made a mockery of, and basically exploited in every single episode of the cartoon. It’s fantastic; I adore the idea that the concept of evil is being made fun of. A pet platypus repeatedly thwarts the bad guy. What could be better? I love the idea that my kids are learning to see evil as ridiculous and easily conquered.
I also love the musicality. The show incorporates music beautifully. It is is up beat, inspiring, and hilarious. There is always a stress on rhythm as well. One of my very favorites is called “Evil Love,” and it is so catchy that I sometimes find myself humming it. I actually find myself humming more than just that one.
With so many terrible influences out there waiting to snag my kids attention, this cartoon is a spot of light in the darkness. Even if you are an adult without kids I recommend that you take a look at it sometime. It’s positivity and creativity always makes me smile.
